Defiant Requiem (2012 - 87 minutes) In 1944, in the concentration camp Terezin, conductor Rafael Schächter led 150 fellow prisoners in a performance of Verdi’s Requiem for the Nazi commanders, a performance that testified to the defiance and survival of the human spirit. Artists and musicians were allowed to create and perform as part of Nazi propaganda, but instead, a lively underground cultural scene flourished. 70 years after WWII, a choir returns to the site of the concentration camp to perform Verdi’s Requiem in memory of all who were lost. Following the film will be a special musical discussion presented by Chamber Music on the Fox artistic director Sara Sitzer. She will share a preview of Lost Voices: Music of Terezín, to be performed live at Congregation Kneseth Israel on Monday, April 27, at 7:30pm. |
