Four Things This Summer 2020
Torah Study: Portion of the Week
Thursdays at 4PM (NOTE: 4PM!)
Since Covid-19 began some of us have been meeting on Saturday early evening to discuss the Torah portion of the week. (Parshat HaShavuah) The conversations are great and together our knowledge expands with the wide ranging discussion. There are no prerequisites and Hebrew is not required. Join us for a fascinating look at the Bible. We will begin (again) Thursday afternoon, June 25 at 4PM. Check your email or contact Rabbi at rabbi@ckielgin.org for sign on info.
Beginning Again: An Introduction to Judaism
Wednesdays at 7:30PM
Need to fill gaps in your Hebrew School education. Trying to keep up with your kids. Want to go back to the very beginning. Married to someone Jewish and want to understand moe of what we do. Thinking about converting to Judaism. Dip your toes in the water and join us for this one hour, 12 week class and get your questions answered.
Topics covered:
Each week we will also explore one of the key concepts in Judaism from Rabbi Arthur Green's book, Judaism's 10 Best Ideas, A Brief Guide for Seekers
We will begin Wednesday, July 1 at 7:30. Can't make all twelve sessions? Don't worry. We will record them.
Check your email or contact Rabbi at rabbi@ckielgin.org for sign on info.
Finding Hope: An Interfaith Panel
Sunday, June 28 at 2:00 PM
I am speaking through Gail Borden Public Library this Sunday, June 28th on Finding Hope. The panelists include Pastor Nat Edmond from Second Baptist, (Christian), Lisa Luangsomkham (Buddhist), Azam Nizamuddin (Muslim) and Keith Parsons (Atheist). It should be a great afternoon and help soothe the soul.
Jewish Binge Watching: Your Questions Answered
Tuesday, June 30th at 10:00 AM
Staying at home and watching TV? Watching Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, UnOrthodox, Shtisel? Others?
Have questions? I will be on Zoom at 10:00 AM to try to answer them. Bring them and try to stump the rabbi.
There of course other opportunities to engage Jewishly. Read a Jewish book. Participate in our own book group. I am looking forward to reading Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowtiz's new book, The Book of Jonah, a Social Justice Commentary. As always, what I read are all reviewed on Goodreads https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/20767702-margaret-klein?shelf=currently-reading and posted then to Facebook. Some are Jewish. Some are not. Expect me to have a good mystery on hand or a "beach book." What are you reading this summer? Or learn to make challah or some other wonderful Jewish food.
Alef Bet Hebrew:
A number of you have said you want Alef-Bet Hebrew again. We are in the process of lining up a teacher. By the end of the class and in time for the High Holy Days you will be reading Hebrew smoothly. Not translating but decoding this new-to-you Alef Bet. A good class for beginners or those looking to brush up their reading skills. We need a minimum of six to run this class. Who would like to learn and most importantly, afternoon or evening? (At least two of you want evening because you are working.) Fee: $50 to cover instructor and book.
It adds substance and spiritual meaning to our lives.
