Jake Shulman-Ment is coming to Elgin from New York to astound the audience with an unforgettable performance of Klezmer music. Violinist Abigale Reisman from Boston and clarinetist Kurt Bjorling of Chicago complete the Klezmer trio.
Over the years, the clarinet and brass-dominated mid-century American klezmer sound has enjoyed many wonderful iterations and innovations. Still, the older Eastern European string-based sound has been somewhat overlooked. The sound of this trio will evoke the joyful celebrations and prayerful laments of the shtetls and villages of a bygone world of Jewish life. This type of Yiddish culture has much to offer the world of today, being a profound source of Jewishness independent of any one particular territory or land. Jake, Abigale and Kurt are among a small handful of contemporary performers capable of channeling the voice of this music across centuries and continents, speaking to audiences through their instruments in riveting and authentically individual ways.
Considered one of the finest klezmer fiddlers on the planet, Jake, a classically trained violinist, is also a highly regarded teacher, composer and ethnographer. His klezmer technique was shaped by extensive travels through eastern Europe studying klezmer and folk music.
Born in New York City, Jake is among the most highly regarded klezmer musicians performing today. He tours and records internationally as a soloist and with others. Jake has performed at venues and festivals around the world such as +Central Park Summer Stage, Skirball Center, Lincoln Center, Symphony space, Rudolstadt, Budapest Palace of the Arts, Kennedy Center, Library of Congress, Teatro Manzoni, Krakow Jewish Culture Festival, and many more. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.
